Auburn City Schools is embarking on a transformative journey that will reshape the educational landscape of the community. With a $400 million investment, the district plans to construct new schools and renovate or rebuild several existing schools. Read on to learn more about Auburn City Schools’ new master plan to be completed by 2035.
About the updated master plan
Along with accommodating the current growth rate, Auburn City Schools’ new master plan took future population estimates into account. More specifically, the 2035 Master Plan includes constructing a second high school, which is currently underway, and a new middle school.
Recently named “Plains High School” in the spirit of Auburn, the new high school will accommodate up to 2,200 students. The school is on a 128-acre plot of land off North Donahue Drive, directly across from the Auburn University Club neighborhood.
As for the new middle, construction will begin this year on a newly purchased 88 acres near Will Buechner Parkway. The projected completion date for the new high school and middle school is 2028.
More about the plan
In addition to the new construction, Auburn Junior High will undergo renovations in 2028 and become a second middle school by 2030. In 2029, East Samford School will convert to other academic and support functions.
Additionally, two of the system’s oldest schools—Dean Road Elementary School and Wrights Mill Road Elementary School—will be demolished and rebuilt in 2029 with expected completion dates in 2030.
To recap, the 10 primary schools—including the rebuilt Dean Road and Wrights Mill schools—will continue to serve Kindergarten through 2nd grade and 3rd through 5th grade. Drake Middle School will continue to serve 6th grade only, while the new middle school and Auburn Junior High will house 7th and 8th graders.
From there, the new middle school will feed directly into the new high school. Meaning Auburn Junior High will flow to Auburn High School. Both high schools will serve 9th through 12th grade.
