decluttering your home

Before the spring rush is upon us, organize your home. Decluttering creates a more aesthetically pleasing environment, promotes mental clarity and reduces stress. Transform your living space into a sanctuary of peace and productivity with these tips for decluttering your home.

Decide where to start.

A tidy home can lead to enhanced productivity and overall well-being. But getting started can feel daunting. However, with the right approach, decluttering your home can be liberating. With that said, a good place to start is deciding where to start.

Pick an area or room you spend the most time or that causes you the most stress. Once you’ve chosen the starting point, tackling the rest of the home will be easier. Remember, keep it in perspective with small steps and accomplishments, like cleaning a drawer or shelf.

Make a plan.

Create a plan of attack. Identify your overall goals and establish a written timeline for when you want to achieve them. Maintaining motivation is easier with a plan and by breaking the process down into manageable steps.

Include how much time you want to spend decluttering your home, list the rooms in order of importance and create a checklist to track your progress.

Sort your items.

A practical approach to decluttering is to sort all your items. Create three piles: keep, donate and throw out. Keep the items you use regularly or hold sentimental value. Donate items in good condition but no longer serve you. Throw out damaged or broken items beyond repair.

Do you struggle to decide what to keep, donate or throw away? Try a couple of different tactics to help. First, there is the “5-second rule.” Give yourself just five seconds to decide an item’s fate. Ask yourself if you use, love it or need it. If you answer no to those questions, it’s time to say goodbye.

Use smart storage solutions.

When it comes to smart storage solutions, think outside the box. Not everything has to be hidden away or stored in bins. Maintain a clean, organized look with built-in storage, stackable drawers, decorative boxes and pretty baskets. Clear containers work well in certain areas, such as a pantry. Add labels to the containers to help identify what’s in them.

Clear away the clutter quickly.

Finally, don’t let the items you want to sell, donate or throw away linger in piles around your home. Take a day to drop items off at recycling centers or thrift stores. Market any items you want to sell online. Proper dispose of the items you want to throw away.
