a second high school in the city of Auburn

It’s easy to see the continued growth with a quick drive around Auburn. So, it comes as no surprise that a second high school in the city of Auburn is in the near future.

About the second high school in Auburn

Talk of a second high school in the city of Auburn has been in the works for a long time. In fact, according to reports, public forums discussing the possibility of another high school were held in 2014. The decision to move forward with a second high school in the city of Auburn within the next 10 years was approved in 2018.

Now, the plan is to start construction on the 348,000-square-foot high school by 2024. The projected completion date is around January 2027, with an opening date of August 2027. At that time, more decisions about the new high school will be made. That includes things such as a name, colors, mascot and rezoning.

More about the future high school

The second high school will be located on about 82 acres located east of North Donahue Drive and north of Shug Jordan Parkway. The new school will be near Yarbrough Elementary School and the Auburn University Club.

It will accommodate grades 9-12 and about 1,600 students, with room to grow. Plans feature a three-story classroom building, a two-story athletic building and a one-story performing arts building. There will also be competition track and field, two athletic practice fields, competition softball and baseball fields, six tennis courts and a band practice field.

More about Auburn City Schools

According to reports, Auburn City Schools stated they are the 17th largest school system in the state and the sixth largest among city systems. In the fall of 2022, reports shared that ACS was home to 9,410 students in grades K-12.

That breaks down to about 700 students per grade, on average. Current estimates predict that the school system will support about 10,000 students by 2032.

For now, the current high school, which was completed in 2017, will continue to serve students in grades 10-12.
