Auburn’s deep roots as a leader in the field of agricultural research will soon grow deeper. In November, university, state, and national leaders celebrated the groundbreaking for the National Soil Dynamics Laboratory at Auburn University.
About the facility
A total of four new buildings will be added to the National Soil Dynamics Laboratory to support and expand upon existing leading-edge agricultural research.
Representatives from Auburn University’s College of Agriculture, the Auburn Research and Technology Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and other state leaders were on hand on November 28, 2022, to mark the occasion.
According to reports, two new buildings will be constructed in the Auburn Research Park, including a 33,000-square-foot facility. Plus, two additional buildings will be located near the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Current research efforts will be meet by the state-of-the-art facilities. Built in the 1930s and 1960s, the National Soil Dynamics Laboratory’s has outgrown the existing facilities.
Construction is expected to begin this month, with a projected 2027 completion date.
The future research
According to additional reports, the laboratory’s expansion will create spaces for further research in areas such as global climate change, conservation cropping systems, and environmentally sound animal waste management.
But those aren’t the only areas for future study and research. In fact, research will also look at cotton disease control, improved forage production, improved poultry production, and the use of biochar in agriculture.
Sounds cool, right? It is! Check out this brief ARS explanation about biochar for a better idea of what type of research will continue in Auburn.
