renovations to Plainsman Park

Auburn baseball fans will soon be seeing some major upgrades to Plainsman Park. Following the approval of the Auburn University Board of Trustees in July, the park is set to get a number of improvements, including a “Green Monster Terrace” behind left field. Renovations to Auburn’s Plainsman Park will enhance the fan experience and keep Auburn’s baseball facilities competitive with other nationally-ranked programs.

These improvements are coming after another successful season for the Auburn Tigers baseball team. For the second time in the last three postseasons, the Tigers advanced to the College World Series in 2022, earning their first win in Omaha since 1997.

Athletic director Allen Greene stated in an interview with Tom Green at AL.com that “enthusiasm for Auburn baseball has never been higher. Coach Butch Thompson, his staff and student-athletes have achieved remarkable, sustained success.” Greene also said that “these improvements will help Auburn baseball continue its trajectory toward a national championship while elevating the fan experience at Plainsman Park.”

Plainsman Park

Plainsman Park first opened in 1950 and has been home to Auburn’s baseball team for the past 67 seasons. Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park seats 4,096, including 3,227 chairback seats.

The park has seen numerous makeovers since its initial renovations in 1996. These include the addition of a strength and rehabilitation center and upgrades to the Auburn clubhouse, locker room, equipment room, and athletic training room in 2013 and 2014. In addition, both the home and away dugouts were extended 10 feet and new benches and permanent camera wells were added.

What’s to come

In July, the Auburn University Board of Trustees approved the upcoming renovations to Auburn’s Plainsman Park. These improvements include:

  • The return of Plainsman Patio.
  • Beer and wine sales for select games in the Plainsman Patio and Tiger Terrace.
  • A new student section located beyond the outfield wall in right-center field.
  • Right Field Terrace: the expansion of the first base stands over Josh Donaldson Hitting Lab to include premium seating and an enhanced concession experience.
  • First Base Club: the expansion of the first base stands, premium seating, club space, concessions, and improvements to the south entrance to Plainsman Park and the future Player Performance Terrace.
  • Green Monster Terrace: the addition of a unique viewing area over the Green Monster, which is the 37-foot wall located in left field. Improvements will include improved concessions and restrooms to support fans in left field.

Summary

In 2016, Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park was named one of the top venues in the country for college baseball by D1Baseball.com, coming in at number seven. With these renovations to Auburn’s Plainsman Park, it is sure to stay ranked among the top venues, and maybe even move up in the rankings.
