Long summer days at the pool are coming to an end just as things are heating up for two local swimming holes. Plans for aquatics facilities upgrades in Opelika are officially beginning to take shape!
What’s in the works
According to reports, the city teamed up with a nationally-known design firm specializing in aquatic planning, Counsilman-Hunsaker, in March.
At that time, Opelika residents were invited to offer feedback and suggestions for what they would want to see at both Covington Recreation Center and the Opelika Sportsplex.
From there, ideas and community needs were both considered as specific plans for aquatics facilities upgrades in Opelika were developed.
While there is still much to be done, the plans are close to being finalized.
The future upgrades
As far as the expected aquatics facilities upgrades in Opelika, visitors will be pleased to know the request for more available lap lanes at both public pools was heard.
Additions to the Covington Rec Center include zero-depth entry, multiple shade structures, rental pavilions, two 25-yard lap lanes, a waterslide and children’s spraypad. The spraypad will be a wet deck with no standing water but plenty of spray and ground water features.
Next up in terms of aquatics facilities is what’s on deck for the Opelika Sportsplex. This local facility is not only available to residents, it is the base for local swim teams too. Plus, competitive swim meets are also held at the complex.
Proposed upgrades factored in both resident requests as well as swim team and competitive meets’ needs. In the end, the outdoor pool will include up to 24, 25-yard lap lanes as well as eight 50-meter lanes.
Another upgrade will benefit those cheering on the swimmers when it comes to race day. There will be more shaded bleachers for the spectators.
There will also be a new children’s spraypad featuring a children’s play unit with several water features like “dump buckets,” for example.
If all goes according to plan, guests may be making a splash in the new aquatics facilities by 2024.
