You might think of June and think about it being the first month of summer. But did you know? June is also National Homeownership Month. What does that mean, exactly? Let’s find out!
What is National Homeownership Month?
Essentially, National Homeownership Month is a time to learn more about homeownership and its benefits.
It is intended to encourage people across the country to make the decision to buy a house—provided they are in a good place financially to do so. It can also give people the incentive to start saving for their future homes, as well as lead them towards federal or state financial assistance.
Fun fact: When this event was first created in 1995, it was actually just National Homeownership Week. Then, in 2002, the federal government extended it, creating National Homeownership Month instead.
The benefits of homeownership
Owning a home can be one of the most rewarding decisions a person can make.
Homes are an excellent investment, since they grow in value over time. They will also save you money in the long run.
Because your mortgage can be at a fixed rate, it will not increase from year to year—unlike rent.
Instead of losing money renting, a home allows you to build equity. Not to mention, the payments will help you reach a higher credit score over time.
And, it’s likely that your home will come with added tax benefits, which can save you a significant amount of money come April.
Last but not least, when you own a home, you have more flexibility and freedom. You don’t have to worry about pet fees or ruining the walls when you hang up a picture. Your home is yours—and you can do with it what you want.
Ways you can celebrate National Homeownership Month
You have a ton of cool options for celebrating National Homeownership Month.
For one, you can take pride in your house, townhome, or apartment by cleaning it thoroughly or tackling a home improvement project.
You can also commemorate the month by giving friends housewarming gifts for their new places.
Or, you can read all about real estate. (Our blog is a great place to start.)
The best way to celebrate National Homeownership Month, though, is by finding a home of your own!
