Pepperell Village

The East Alabama area is full of history. From Auburn University’s campus, to the Museum of East Alabama, our area’s history is showcased all around us. For residents of Pepperell Village in Opelika, that’s especially true. In today’s neighborhood spotlight, we’ll explore a part of the past you may not know about.

The story of Pepperell Village

The history of the Pepperell Village neighborhood, or Pepperell Mill Village, begins with the subject of its name. Back in 1844, Pepperell Manufacturing Company opened in Maine. It was owned by Samuel Batchelder, who did innovative work in the textiles field.

Over the years, it began to expand. It set its eye down South, searching for a place to open a new mill. This was big news for Opelika!

Local businessmen took it upon themselves in 1924 to talk to those behind the new mill. Though their meeting went well, there was a hitch: to build the mill there, they needed $60,000. Just to do the math: with inflation, that would be about $975,256.14 today.

Initially, it looked like they would fail at raising the capital. However, Bill Davis of W.E. Davis and Son heard about this news. He offered $5,000, or about $81,271.35 today.

This spurred a civic campaign, which ultimately led the mill to begin construction in 1925. Along with it, they built 100 houses, which became Pepperell Village. In the years that followed, the area grew to include a baseball and athletic field, a theatre, and grocery store.

Tragically, the mill burned down in 2007. However, its iconic dragon plaque was preserved by the Pepperell Kids, residents who grew up in the area.

Remember how we mentioned the Museum of East Alabama? That’s where the plaque is now. To add to the significance, in 2014, Pepperell Village officially became a National Historic place.
