City of Auburn redistricting

Have you heard the City of Auburn redistricting proposed plans are available for public review? In fact, you can review the plans and more online now!

About City Redistricting

If you are just tuning in to the latest news in regard to the City of Auburn redistricting plan, we’ll start with a quick overview.

First of all, thanks to the 2020 US Census population data, the city has the most up-to-date local population information.

Second of all, it’s required by both federal and state law to review local boundaries once Census data is released.

With that said, a team of city leaders and staff worked with legal experts to thoroughly evaluate Auburn’s local census population data.

Throughout the last 10 years, the population among city wards has become uneven. New developments, annexations and new residents have made their way to town.

Currently, new proposed boundaries have been developed for each of Auburn’s eight wards. Residents are encouraged to review the proposal posted online.

It includes interactive maps as well as population and demographic information. After review, citizens are invited to offer their feedback and suggestions.

Two open houses were scheduled to give residents a chance to find out more, ask questions and provide input.

The first open house was held November 18th and the other was last Monday, December 6th. City officials and staff were on-hand to shed more light on what future boundaries may look like.

More About Redistricting

According to a recent Opelika-Auburn News report, the census data shows a population increase of about 23,000 during the last decade. With all that growth, certain wards have increased in population while others may have declined.

The new boundaries try to keep the average populations within each ward as close to 9,518 people as possible.

Offer feedback with an online survey, or save the date for the December 21st City Council meeting. Tentatively, that’s when the proposal is scheduled go before the council, and residents can comment at that time as well.
