A boost for our local economy! Over the next few years, we’ll receive a steady stream of new jobs and development. For that, we can thank the Jo-Ann distribution center expansion in Opelika. Read more to learn about the details—and how they’ll benefit everyone in town.
What are distribution centers?
The goods we buy all have to come from somewhere! Many of them arrive via distribution centers—like the one Jo-Ann has in Opelika. Essentially, distribution centers hold goods a company will then send off to stores. So, if a Jo-Ann store needs supplies, they’ll order goods from a center—like the one in town!
Fun fact: When it first opened, the center shipped goods off to a whopping 169 stores, spread all across the South! Not to mention, they managed to send off about 10,000 cases a day!
What do Jo-Ann stores sell?
If you like to craft, you’ve probably been to one of Jo-Ann’s stores! They sell arts supplies, fabric, home décor, holiday items, and more. Though we don’t have a Jo-Ann store in town, the two nearest options are in Columbus, GA and Montgomery, AL.
More on the Expansion
Now that we have the basics out of the way, let’s get on to the Jo-Ann distribution center expansion in Opelika. Gary Fuller, the town’s mayor, relayed the news in early May.
First opened in 2006, the center rests just off Interstate 85 at 3101 Anderson Road. At its grand opening, the center spanned an impressive 700,000 square feet. After the estimated $7.7 million upgrade, however, it will likely look a lot different. The process will take a bit of time—three years, to be precise.
And if you want to join the ranks, we have some good news! The center will also make an additional 30 jobs available. So, you could find yourself 285 potential new friends among their existing employees!
How will the expansion impact our local economy?
One of the most heartwarming things we’ve noticed lately is when a business invests in our local economy. Like Botanic in Opelika, Hoytie Toytie’s, and Mo’Bay Beignet Co., many business owners and individuals have put their resources toward a good cause.
And yes, their decisions will come with genuine, tangible benefits! From money put in the pockets of local builders and suppliers, to new jobs for folks in town, to taxes paid to our schools and roads, their choices will make a difference in all our lives.
Summary
Talk about crafting a new—and better—way of life! The Jo-Ann distribution center expansion in Opelika will bring jobs and revenue to town in the next three years. We can’t wait to watch all the progress unfold.
