Finding the summer days a bit dull? Don’t chalk it up to a boring schedule. Instead, you can add some beauty and brightness to the agenda with Auburn’s Sidewalk Chalk Challenge, now through July 26. Brought to you by The Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center and the Auburn Arts Association, this exciting competition will give people of all ages a chance to show off their skill!
What is Auburn’s Sidewalk Chalk Challenge?
We’ve been making new traditions over the past few months, replacing bigger gatherings with more personal events. One of the cool changes on the rotation is Auburn’s Sidewalk Chalk Challenge. It allows people to express themselves and raise the spirit of the community, all the while helping us flatten the curve.
Individuals, children, families and businesses are all invited to participate by creating chalk designs on driveways, walls, inside garages and/or concrete spaces where the artist has permission to work! Prizes will be awarded across a variety of categories on the Auburn Arts Association Facebook page.
How do I participate in Auburn’s Sidewalk Chalk Challenge?
Before you get out the chalk, there are a few things you need to know about Auburn’s Sidewalk Chalk Challenge. First of all, it comes with a theme: it needs to draw style or inspiration from works of well-know architecture or art. Additionally, since the winners will be displayed on social media, creators must ensure the content of their art is appropriate.
Second of all, artists must include either three explanations about why they selected their sources or three facts about the source itself/its maker. If you have a child who wants to enter the competition, he or she will be sure to learn something interesting along the way. In fact, we bet all people participating will find out some fascinating facts. You can find an application here.
Next, you are also welcome to use found objects in your piece and hairspray to help the chalk remain set. Just remember: the chalk should be the most-used medium.
Finally, this event is free for all to enter. However, households and businesses may only put in one entry. And yes—you can win prizes, like a $100 gift card to a local business. Send in your art by July 26 for consideration!
