The weather lately has been cold and dreary, leaving us dreaming of clear skies. Well, there’s something else amazing on the horizon—new kayaking and canoeing opportunities in our own backyard. Here’s an update on the Saugahatchee Creek Blueway Project in Auburn!
What is the Saugahatchee Creek Blueway Project?
The Saugahatchee Creek Blueway Project is also known as the Saugahatchee Creek Blueway-Greenway Project, and it will help enhance our natural environment. Greenways and blueways have been trending across the country, giving residents a place to walk, run, canoe, nestled among urban environments. They can also help decrease erosion and improve drainage.
So, what distinguishes them? Greenways cover the ground, while blueways cover a body of water, like a creek or river.
What features does the Saugahatchee Creek Blueway Project include?
Different ideas have been “floated” around for the project. According to plans, some of the area’s features can include:
- Canoes and kayak drop off areas;
- A water trail, or Blueway, where people can row; and
- A walking and running trail, or a Greenway.
Project Updates
The most recent update on the Saugahatchee Blueway Project includes who will design the venture: Barge Design Solutions. They’ll be contributing to the first phase of the project, which covers a whole lot of ground—100 acres, to be precise. Though the project is still a work in progress, its arrival will mean a safe, fun place for locals to exercise and explore.
Summary
Getting out into nature can improve our moods—and our health. It will also be easier and more accessible for locals to spend time outdoors, all thanks to the Saugahatchee Creek Blueway Project. Hopefully, in the next year or so, residents will be able to enjoy this incredible addition to our town.
