5 Rules to Follow When Flying the American Flag

Flying the American Flag

The Fourth of July is quickly approaching, which is one of—if not the most—hallowed of American holidays. Of course, this event showcases the most thrilling fireworks displays of the year; however, it also celebrates U.S. independence and the American way of life. And, as is customary, many commemorate the holiday by flying the American flag. Here are some rules to follow when flying, as to show the ol’ Stars and Stripes the respect it deserves.

Flying the American Flag with Other Flags

When flying the American flag with other flags on the same staff, such as state, school, or other team-based flags, the U.S. flag should always rest atop the other as a show of respect. If on display against a wall with crossed staffs, the U.S. flag should be on the left (when you’re facing it) and in front of the other flag’s staff. However, the U.S. flag should be flown on the same level and on a separate staff when being flown with flags of other nations, which symbolizes all nations being on an equal footing.

When Displaying the American Flag Flat

If hanging the American flag suits your needs better, you can display the stripes horizontally or vertically. When hung against a wall, the union (the blue field with white stars) should be to the flag’s right. If you’re flying it over a street, the union should face east or north, based on the street’s direction.

Don’t Fly the Flag Upside Down

Flying the American flag upside down is used as a means to signal distress. The American flag should be flown right side up, with the union (again the blue field with white stars) up. Hanging it this way shows the Stars and Bars the proper respect.

Don’t Decorate the Flag

Decorating the flag may seem appealing; however, letting the American flag stand on its own is proper practice. Who needs frills when you have the ultimate symbol of freedom, anyway? The Old Glory commands the most patriotic sentiment on its own.

Try to Keep the Flag from Touching the Ground

As the flag is a hallowed symbol, it should be treated with proper respect. Remember to hang the flag in a way that it does not touch your roof, car, and especially, the ground. This rule keeps the flag from becoming smudged, discolored, or otherwise defiled. Firmly fix the flag to your right fender if you wish to fly it on your car or truck.

This holiday season, keep these rules in mind when showing your patriotism. Flying the American flag is a right we get to enjoy as American citizens—and protecting one of the pillars of American freedom is our duty.
