second phase of Auburn’s single stream recycling program

Recycling is about to get a whole lot easier for a handful of Auburn residents. Since Auburn started its single stream recycling program in December 2017, residents who were included in the first phase of the initiative have been able to collect all of their recyclables in one single 95-gallon blue receptacle to be placed curbside for pickup. Now, the second phase of Auburn’s single stream recycling program is underway and is poised to be completed at the end of January 2019.

Auburn’s Environmental Services department has been working since December 2018 to distribute 7,000 single-stream recycling receptacles to homes that expressed interest in participating in the program as part of its second phase. Weather depending, the city expects all receptacles to be delivered by the end of this month.

Single stream recycling allows participants to place all of their recyclable items in one single receptacle. As a reminder, these are the items that are accepted as part of the program:

  • Plastics Nos.1-7 (includes plastic bottles and food containers)
  • Aluminum, steel/tin cans
  • All paper types
  • Flattened cardboard, no larger than four-by-two feet

The following items should not be placed in the single stream recycling bins:

  • Plastic bags or toys
  • Styrofoam
  • Glass (Glass can still be recycled in the city of Auburn by taking it to the Recycling Drop-Off Center at 365-A North Donahue Drive._

Reminders:

  • Rinse materials before placing in bin when relevant (i.e. tin cans, plastic bottles, etc.)
  • Place carts at least three feet away from the curb, garbage bins, mailboxes, vehicles and other obstacles.
  • Recycling pickup happens the same day as your regular garbage pickup day.

The second phase of Auburn’s single stream recycling program gives more Auburn residents the opportunity to reduce waste in our landfills. Environmentally-conscious programs like this one add to the list of reasons why Auburn is a great place to live!
