Auburn City Schools earned an “A”

The results are in—and Auburn City Schools earned an “A” on the state report card. This score shows welcome incremental growth: it is a slight uptick from the two previous academic years, with Auburn City Schools nabbing a passing “B” grade both times.

Auburn City Schools’ rating rests a little above the state average, with the state netting a statewide grade of “B” for school-level grades. This upswing in report card grades seems to be a trend across the state.

While passed into law as a statewide initiative in 2012, statewide report cards were not released until December of 2016. The state has witnessed a small incline of improvement since the 2016-17 school year, with schools earning a statewide rating of “C” during the state’s inaugural report card.

The report card system has come under fire in some circles; however, proponents point to increased parental understanding as a measure of the system’s success. Grades are based on multiple indicators, including academic achievement, academic growth, graduation rate, college and career readiness, progress in English language proficiency, and chronic absenteeism.

The fact that Auburn City Schools earned an “A” on the state report card  is quite an achievement considering that 12 schools fall under the umbrella of the Auburn City School system. Many schools across the state saw a shift to the higher end of the grading scale, with the number of schools earning A’s increasing from 137 to 202. The number of schools scoring F’s statewide fell—from 104 to only 39.

The news that Auburn City Schools earned an “A” on the state report card is just one among many reasons why the Auburn area is such a great place to live, work and play.
