Moving can be a long, exhausting process! We’ve all been there—the endless packing, last-minute maintenance, and sad goodbyes. Because of the never-ending list of things to do, many people forget a few items along the way. One of the biggest—and most worrisome—items on the agenda to ignore is letting people and companies know about your change of address. Make sure that you can check off this list of people to notify when you move.
- The DMV. The acronym “DMV” remains one of the most dreaded in the business. Still, don’t neglect this essential institution. Whether or not you’re moving states, you will need to register your change of address with the DMV—pronto.
- The SSA. A much more well-regarded acronym with big connotations is the “SSA,” or Social Security Administration. Because of the highly-sensitive information it deals with, you won’t want to delay in letting the SSA know just where to address its mail.
- Friends, family, and other acquaintances. Though many people nowadays prefer to communicate through email or text, others enjoy sending postcards, birthday messages, or everyday messages through the postal service. If you receive mail from friends, family, or holiday card enthusiasts, don’t forget to slip them your new address!
- Subscriptions and online accounts. If you like subscription boxes, monthly magazines, or simply enjoy the occasional online shopping spree, you most likely have a standard address already entered online. If you forget to change it by your move, other people may receive your new books or slippers! This can even go for ordering delivery food—don’t let yourself pay for a pizza a lucky resident will eat instead. After your address online, spend the next month closely reviewing your shipping information just in case. It’s much less stressful than a delivery mishap!
- S. postal service. Don’t let your letters end up in the wrong place! Make sure to register your change of address with the postal service.
- Your old place of residence. This may sound strange, as they most likely know that you’re moving. However, you may still get packages or bills sent to your old address, so make sure to leave your new one with your old place of residence to allow forwarding!
- Big bill providers. This last item is perhaps the most crucial, especially if you want your new home to be livable. While many apartment complexes and residential areas won’t let you move in until you transfer your electric account, it’s still possible to miss something. Make sure you contact your cell phone service provider, insurance agents, internet and television provider, and all other sources of household bills. Otherwise, you might get the power shut off.
Whether you’ve just moved or are still in progress, you still have time to go through this list of people to notify when you move. They’ll certainly be grateful for the trouble you’ll save them in the future, preventing a barrage of letters to a place where you no longer reside. Now, for the next order of business: get ready to enjoy your new home!
