Memorial Day 2018 events in Auburn and Opelika

Memorial Day, a holiday designated to honor those who died while serving in our country’s military, is coming up this Monday, May 28. While some may just be excited for a three-day weekend, keep in mind that Memorial Day signifies much more than that. If you are looking for a way to honor our fallen heroes this Monday, check out these Memorial Day 2018 events in Auburn and Opelika.

14th Annual Mayor’s Memorial Day Breakfast, Auburn

  • When: Monday, May 28 at 8 a.m.
  • Where: The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center
  • Cost: $25 each, $250 for table of 10

Auburn Mayor Bill Ham, Jr., and the Auburn Veterans Committee invite citizens to attend the 14th Annual Mayor’s Memorial Day Breakfast to honor the United States Military and those who sacrificed their lives to protect our country’s citizens. Andrew “Andy” LaMar, Jr., recipient of the 2012 City of Auburn Distinguished Veteran Award, will be the guest of honor. This year’s breakfast will also feature the first Auburn Heroes Remembered Award, which will be presented to the family of a local distinguished veteran who has passed away. This inaugural award will be given in honor of Edward R. Schowalter. Following the breakfast at 10 a.m., the City of Auburn will hold its annual memorial wreath laying ceremony at the Auburn Veterans Memorial Monument at the northeast corner of Ross Street and Glenn Avenue.

 

Memorial Day Services, Opelika

  • When: Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m.
  • Where: Opelika City Hall, 204 South Seventh Street, Opelika

The City of Opelika’s Memorial Day Services will take place Monday, May 28 starting at 10 a.m. at Opelika City Hall. The services will be followed by a reception at 11 a.m. at the Museum of East Alabama at 121 South Ninth Street in Opelika, which will feature special guest speaker Jamie Popwell representing Flags for Vets, Inc. Flags for Vets is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting veterans with flagpoles and flags to be displayed at their homes.
