Home improvement doesn’t have to break the bank, and if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to give your home a facelift, addressing its curb appeal is a good place to start. Think of curb appeal as potential buyers’ first impression of your home, whether they are seeing it in a photo online or in-person. Either way, you want your home to stand out among the competition. Consider these quick ways to enhance your home’s curb appeal without dropping a ton of money in the process.
- Paint. Paint is an inexpensive and instant way to enhance your home’s curb appeal. Don’t think that you have to paint the entire exterior of the home, however. Think of accent areas like the trim, railing, shutters or porch floor/ceiling.
- Shutters. Speaking of shutters, adding them to your home if you don’t already have them is another way to boost your home’s curb appeal. Shutters make your windows look larger, and they add visual interest.
- Door. Your front door is a focal point on the front of your house that you shouldn’t ignore. If you think your home is in need of an exterior face lift, you can save money by painting your door or adding molding rather than replacing it entirely.
- Light fixtures. Light fixtures can have a powerful effect on the overall aesthetic of your home. Upgrade your exterior light fixtures to enhance curb appeal, or revamp the ones you already have with a fresh coat of paint.
- Furniture. If you are fortunate enough to have space for outdoor furniture, keep it minimal when improving curb appeal to sell your home. You do not want to overwhelm your home’s appearance with an excess of furniture. Think about pops of color and styles that will appeal to a majority of people.
- Mailbox. Your mailbox will likely not be as noticeable in pictures, but it will still contribute to your home’s curb appeal when it is viewed in person. If your mailbox is older or rusting, paint it, or replace it entirely.
- House numbers. A new set of house numbers on the exterior of your home and/or your mailbox can do wonders. Plus, they’re cheap! You can purchase a set for about $5 per number at most big box stores.
- Trees. Add some foliage to your yard by planting a tree—or two! Make sure you think about the placement strategically and know how large your tree of choice is expected to grow. You do not want the tree to eventually obscure the front of your home.
- Flowers. Along the same lines, landscaping your yard with some pops of color is an inexpensive and easy way to help your home’s curb appeal. Plant flowers in garden beds, install flower boxes in your windows or house them in containers on your front porch.
- Clean up. Simply cleaning up the exterior of your home is a critical step to enhancing your home’s curb appeal—and you likely already have everything you need. Tidy up your yard, pressure wash your driveway and clean your windows inside and out. Also, be sure to remove unnecessary debris—anything that is taking away from the appeal of your home!
If you are selling your home this spring or summer, plan a weekend to make these quick changes to enhance your home’s curb appeal!
