Trash Amnesty Month

Ready to start your spring cleaning efforts? Trash Amnesty Month is in full swing in Auburn, so throw out your oversized trash fee-free until April 27!

What to expect this month

The following trash qualify as oversized:

  • Tree limbs,
  • Large volumes of leaves and grass clippings,
  • Appliances,
  • Furniture, and
  • Other hefty objects more than five cubic yards.

Not included in Trash Amnesty Month are hazardous waste, rocks, construction materials, dirt, roofing, and so forth.

If you intend to participate this month, place your oversized debris about three feet or less from fixed objects by the roadside, like your mailbox or utility pole. Trash must be in place by 6 a.m. on regularly scheduled pickup days. Ensure your trash is bundled to avoid creating accidental road obstructions.

Additionally, ensure your wood, leaf and grass clippings, plastic, and metal debris is separated to the best of your abilities to help the city’s recycling efforts!

With the amount of debris that the Auburn Environmental Services expect to collect, don’t be surprised if your pick-up time is later than usual.

Why Trash Amnesty Month?

Last year, the city supported Trash Amnesty Week instead of month, as it had since 2005. This year, the City Council changed it into a month—or rather, six full weeks beginning on May 19—thanks to the request of the Auburn Environmental Services.

Outside of those weeks, residents typically pay $50 to $100 for oversized trash pickup depending on the load size. Spring is a time for cleaning in many households, and Auburn Environmental Services want nothing more than to help residents improve their neighborhood than by making trash pickup easier. Their solution is to waive fees during the weeks of Trash Amnesty.
