Despite a third or fourth round of winter we experienced in the East Alabama area at the end of last month, things are finally warming up for spring—both weather-wise and in terms of community events! It’s time to come out of hibernation and get active outside, whether for fun, for personal improvement or for a good cause. Check out Ryan’s top 10 April 2018 events in Auburn and Opelika!

Becoming the Beloved Community, April 5

  • What: Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art hosts a series of events related to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s concept of “The Beloved Community,” which, according to thekingcenter.org, is “a global vision, in which all people can share the wealth of the earth.” Events will include intergenerational, interdisciplinary and interfaith discussions, and all are free and open to the public.

Red Clay Brewing 3rd Anniversary Celebration, April 6-7

  • What: Celebrate the third anniversary of Opelika’s only brewery with bands starting around 7 p.m. Vendors include Big Blue Crawfish, Long Pine Hospitality, LLC, O Town Ice Cream and Wilton’s Catering. Bands include Daniel Bowden, Leroy Cold, Wilk, Dogwood Lung, Beagles, West Chewacla Rhythm Section.

Country Rocks the Plains Featuring Brothers Osborne, April 6

  • What: The Hudson Family Foundation presents its annual benefit concert, “Country Rocks the Plains.” The event will feature performances by country duo Brothers Osborne and Opelika’s own Blane Rudd.

Auburn Football A-Day, April 7

  • What: Auburn’s annual intrasquad scrimmage game will showcase for fans what they can expect for the Tigers this upcoming football season. Tickets are $5, and Auburn students get in free with a valid Ignited Card.

Iron Chef Showdown Dinner, April 10

  • What: The dinner will feature a five-course menu based on dishes that were served during Chef David Bancroft’s Iron Chef Battle that aired on Food Network on December 20, 2017. Tickets are $150 each and include all food and beverage.

6th Annual Chewacla Classic Camper Rally, April 14

  • What: Supporters and promoters of vintage campers will gather together for their annual rally in beautiful Chewacla State Park. There will be an open house from 1 to 4 p.m., a group photo at 5 p.m., a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m., door prizes and more.

18th Annual Old 280 Boogie, April 21

  • What: Enjoy an eclectic mix of musical performances, arts and artisans, food vendors, farmers and more on the grounds of Standard Deluxe in peaceful Waverly, Alabama. Performers this year include Shinyribs, Rev. Sekou, Revel in Dimes, Chris Stalcup & The Grange, The Pine Hill Haints and Marshall Ruffin.

Auburn CityFest, April 28

  • What: Auburn’s largest free outdoor festival returns for a day of live music, arts and crafts, vendors, children’s activities, food and more. Entry is free to the public, and this is a rain or shine event!

Bo Bikes Bama, April 28

  • What: This annual charity bike ride led by two-sport legend and Alabama native Bo Jackson raises money for the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund. Participating riders can choose either a 60-mile or 20-mile route.

Jason Dufner Foundation’s 2018 Celebrity Golf Classic, April 30

  • What: This celebrity golf tournament sponsored by the Dufner Foundation serves to raise money and awareness for childhood hunger in Lee County. The foundation currently provides food for more than 1,000 children throughout the school year as well as other initiatives.
