There’s nothing quite like refreshing the look of a room in your home; however, your budget may prevent you from doing a complete remodel. Don’t worry—you still have options! Your kitchen is one of the most functional, and therefore one of the most visually diverse, rooms in your house. That gives you plenty of ways to update your kitchen without remodeling.

From new cabinets to fresh lighting, check out these ideas for giving your kitchen a makeover that don’t involve knocking down walls to do so!

Appliances. One of the easiest ways to update your kitchen without remodeling is to purchase new appliances. Dated appliances give your kitchen the overall feel of it being dated as well. Upgrade your refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and/or oven to stainless steel, for example, to give your kitchen a polished, modern look.

Cabinets. They’re everywhere in your kitchen, and therefore they have a significant impact on your kitchen’s overall design scheme. If you are happy with the layout of your kitchen, a lower-cost way to make over your cabinets is cabinet re-facing. With cabinet re-facing, you replace the doors and hardware and cover the exterior of the cabinets with a new veneer. You can also opt to paint, which is even less expensive than re-facing. Replacing cabinet and drawer knobs and pulls another way to upgrade their look.

Lighting. Refresh your kitchen by replacing your dated light fixtures. Lighting can have a significant impact on the overall aesthetic of any room. If your kitchen currently houses harsh, fluorescent lighting, replace it with something softer. Take into consideration both the type of lighting being used, as well as the design of the light fixtures themselves.

Shelves. To give your kitchen a more open feel, replace a few of your cabinet doors with glass doors to reveal your shelving. You could also do away with cabinets altogether and use free-floating shelving instead. That’s if you feel confident in keeping your dishes and utensils organized—and if they are aesthetically pleasing enough to show off.

Counters. Replacing countertops can get expensive, but there are more affordable ways to go about it. For example, Formica laminate can give the appearance of granite but at a far lower cost. If you are lacking in counter space, you can also consider adding an island to improve your kitchen’s appeal.

Backsplash. Adding a new backsplash is another easy way to update your kitchen without remodeling. Tile, shiplap and even high-gloss paint are all viable options that are easy for DIY-ing. Just make sure that your backsplash matches any upgrades you make elsewhere in your kitchen.
