single-stream recycling in Auburn

If you live in Auburn, you may have come home recently to find a new, blue, 95-gallon recycling receptacle left by your curb. That’s a sign that single-stream recycling in Auburn is starting soon, which will make it easier for residents to collect their recyclables for pickup.

What is single-stream recycling?

With help from a $288,000 grant, the City of Auburn will switch to single-stream recycling starting Dec. 4, 2017. With single-stream recycling, residents will be able to place all of their recyclables into one container and place it curbside for pickup on their regular garbage collection days. Currently, those who participate in curbside pickup have to separate their recyclables into glass, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, etc. and place them in distinct containers. Single-stream recycling in Auburn will eliminate the need for multiple containers, streamlining the recycling process for residents.

What can I recycle with single-stream?

Single-stream recycling in Auburn will accept the following materials:

  • Aluminum cans
  • Flattened cardboard
  • Paper, including junk mail, envelopes, magazines, newspapers, office paper, etc.
  • Plastic, Nos. 1 through 7, including plastic bottles and food containers
  • Steel/tin cans

The following items will not be eligible for pickup via Auburn’s single-stream program:

  • Glass (Glass can still be recycled at Auburn’s Recycling Drop-Off Center on Donahue Drive.)
  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic toys
  • Styrofoam
  • Any other material

Why single-stream?

Over the past five years in Auburn’s annual Citizen Survey, there has been a 7.3 percent decline in satisfaction with the current curbside recycling program, with citizens citing the inability to put all recyclables into one container as their most significant source of dissatisfaction. Single-stream will eliminate that issue and also give residents a larger container in which they can collect their recyclables, possibly eliminating the need to have to put it out each week.

In addition, historic trends show that municipalities that implemented curbside programs saw increased participation and material recovery happening at a higher rate. In turn, this also decreases landfill disposal costs and increases efficiency in the collection process.

Approximately 40 neighborhoods are included in the initial roll-out of single-stream recycling in Auburn, after which the city says the program will be expanded as quickly as possible.

The implementation of Auburn’s new single-stream recycling program is another item to add to the list of reasons why living in Auburn is so desirable! For your real estate needs in and around the Auburn area, contact Realtor Ryan Roberts today at 334-750-9872, or email [email protected]!
