7 Ways to Decorate Your House for Thanksgiving

From the retelling of favorite family stories to football and turkey frying, Thanksgiving is a holiday that certainly boasts its own unique character each November. Though Christmas and then Halloween reign supreme in the world of holiday decorating, Thanksgiving is also a holiday that offers ample opportunity for festive décor. It may take a little more creativity and DIY-ing, but you can inexpensively decorate your house for Thanksgiving while giving your hungry holiday guests something to “ooh” and “ahh” over.

Check out these seven ways to decorate your house for Thanksgiving this year!

Welcome with a wreath. No fall home is complete without an autumn-themed wreath on the front door. If you are having guests over for Thanksgiving, this will likely be the first thing that welcomes them as they approach your home. If you are feeling crafty, there are literally hundreds of DIY wreath ideas online that don’t take too much time or effort to pull off.

Craft an inspiring centerpiece. At your Thanksgiving table, you’ll want a focal point that successfully brings everything together aesthetically—and one that will impress your guests. Symbolizing the bounty of life, the cornucopia is the most traditional of fall centerpieces, and it’s one that you can make your own depending on what exactly you put in it—from gourds and corn to fruits and veggies. Your centerpiece can stray from the traditional, however. Think in terms of fall foliage, clear vases, painted pumpkins or simply the food itself.

Dress up your mantel. Another focal point of your home during the holidays is your fireplace mantel, which is especially true in the event that you start a fire on a cold evening. Try something simple like a pair of gold candles anchoring either end with branches and pumpkins placed in between. Think about natural elements, and keep things simple. Cluttering your mantel will take away from the overall design.

Employ pops of color. The colors of fall are rich and rustic, which you should use to your advantage when you decorate your house for Thanksgiving. Place pops of color throughout your home using fall foliage such as red, orange and yellow leaves, brightly-colored seasonal fruits and even fresh fall flowers. Combine these pops of color with neutrals and metallic to create contrast.

Customize your chairs. Sometimes the most memorable decorations are those that appear in unexpected places, such as the backs of chairs that surround your dining table. Try tying bows with burlap around the corner of each chair. Then, hot glue materials like feathers, twigs or anything else that will hang nicely over the back of the chair.

Light your feast with candles. Candles are appropriate for practically any holiday, and Thanksgiving is no exception. Create candleholders by drilling holes into wooden logs, surround candles with garland and pinecones or put your mason jars to good use. Candles themselves are stunning enough on their own, but given the right complementary materials, you can really add some light to your Thanksgiving dinner this year.

Personalize with place cards. If you want to have place cards at your Thanksgiving table this year, make them part of the décor! Rather than a plain white piece of paper, use an unexpected material as a place card, such as a leaf, small pumpkin or dried artichoke. Use a sharpie to write your guests’ names and you’re good to go.

When you decorate your house for Thanksgiving, it not only gets you in the holiday spirit, but it will take

the pressure off of scrambling around last-minute to make sure your home is ready for guests!
