Christmas decoration trends for 2017

With Thanksgiving behind us, it’s now officially time to start decorating for Christmas (though more and more people are now pulling the holiday décor trigger pre-Thanksgiving these days). There are exactly four weeks until Christmas, meaning now is the time to pull our boxes of holiday trinkets out of the attic, hoist up our trees and string our homes with twinkling lights. As you initiate the decorating process this holiday season, consider these Christmas decoration trends for 2017 that can bring new life to your festive design scheme.

Go natural. Home décor in general as of late has been trending toward the organic, and the same idea can make for a stunning holiday display. Burlap bows tied on trees or gifts, pinecones on your fireplace mantle or even clear plastic ornaments filled with foliage are a few examples of how to add a natural element to your holiday decorations. Think rustic, yet modern.

Clear as crystal. Crystals (real or crystal-style) are generally a holiday staple, but in 2017 the idea is trending beyond clear and frosty crystals to icy blues, blue-greens and greens. Think about crystals you can hang in your tree, string along your mantle or even using crystal-covered foliage in your table centerpiece.

Whites, metallic and pops of color. A neutral/white color scheme with pops of red or even metallic can make for a clean, contemporary Christmas setup. Metallics like copper and gold are still trending in 2017, but others like tarnished silver and black chrome are also popular as far as holiday décor this season.

Homemade designs. Christmas décor does not have to be expensive. DIY decorations are now more on-trend than ever, and sites like Pinterest provide endless inspiration and instruction. From wreaths to banners, makeshift trees to mantle pieces—holiday decorations that are homemade will not only uniquely dress up your home, but they will give you a sense of satisfaction and pride.

Considering Christmas decoration trends for 2017 does beg the question, can something as traditional as Christmas décor really trend? While Santa, Rudolph and Frosty will never go away, the context you choose to place them can and will change as decorating styles, preferences and resources evolve. Happy holiday decorating!
