What comes to mind when you think of October? If you’re like most people, your answer will probably encompass costume parties, carved pumpkins and orange and black. Or, you may think pink in October—the month in which we recognize breast cancer awareness. Whatever activity, idea or feeling you associate the month with, there’s more than likely an event to show for it. Haunted tours, food and drink festivals and more are what we’re getting excited about in the Auburn and Opelika areas this month. Lee County Fair, Oct. 3-7
- What: Rides, fair food, contests, pageants, shows and live music make up this 71-year tradition sponsored by the Opelika Exchange Club. On opening night, there will be free admission to the fair between 4 and 6 p.m.
- Where: Lee County Fairgrounds, Lafayette Parkway, Lafayette
- When: Gates open at 4 p.m. Oct. 3 and Oct. 7; 6 p.m. Oct. 4-6
- Cost: Tickets are $3 for adults, $2 for children younger than 12 and $1 for seniros and active military personnel. Unlimited ride armbands are $20.
Clydesdales Come to Opelika (Oct. 4) and Auburn (Oct. 5)
- What: The iconic Budweiser Clydesdale horses will trot down Opelika’s Main Street and Downtown Auburn on Oct. 4 and 5 (respectively). Both are entertainment district events.
- Where: Opelika Main Street and Downtown Auburn
- When: 5 to 7 p.m. (both nights)
- Cost: Free
Fright Nights at the Arboretum, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27
- What: Bring blankets, chairs and picnic dinners and enjoy outdoor screenings of some classic monster movies on Fridays during the month of October. Watch Frankenstein (1931) Oct. 6, The Mummy (1932) Oct. 13, The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) Oct. 20 and Dracula (1931) Oct. 27.
- Where: Donald E. Davis Arboretum, 181 Garden Drive, Auburn
- When: 6 to 10 p.m.
- Cost: Free
Sleepy Hollow Haunted Farm, Oct. 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 27-28 and 31
- What: A haunted maze, haunted hayride and haunted house make for a selection of Halloween fun this fall at Sleepy Hollow Haunted Farm. All attractions are age appropriate, and parental guidance is recommended for children under 13.
- Where: 929 Lee County Road 14
- When: 7:30 to 11 p.m.
- Cost: $13 per person per attraction; $30 for combination ticket of all three attractions
Pope’s Haunted Farm, Oct. 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 27-31
- What: Dare to be scared at Pope’s Haunted Farm this Halloween. Special events for 2017 include the Zombie Paintball Safari, Haunted Hayride: Taken, Haunted Barn: Escape and Haunted Forest: Paranormal Activity. Children 12 and younger must be supervised, age limits are up to parental consent. All events are designed to be scary.
- Where: Pope’s Haunted Farm, Bassett Road, Salem
- When: 7:30 to 11 p.m.
- Cost: $15 for one attraction (hayride, barn or forest), $25 for two attractions, $35 for three attractions, $20 for Zombie Paintball Safari, $50 for all four attractions.
Haunted Auburn Walking Tour, Oct. 6-7, 13-14, 20-21
- What: Learn about Auburn’s haunted hot-spots on this walking tour narrated by local historians and regional researches with years of experience documenting paranormal activity in the Auburn area. Stops include the “spooky scoop” on Pine Hill Cemetery, Samford Hall and Auburn University Chapel. Appropriate for ages 12 and up.
- Where: Toomer’s Corner, Auburn
- When: 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
- Cost: Free
The Jungle Book Presented by the Auburn Area Community Theatre, Oct. 12-14, 16
- What: The Auburn Area Community Theatre’s Junior Performers present a modern take on the classic children’s story, The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. Visit all of your favorite characters like Mowgli, Baloo and Bagheera as Mowgli struggles between adapting to jungle life and returning to the human world.
- Where: Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center, 222 E. Drake Ave., Auburn
- When: 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12-14 and 16 with a 4 p.m. matinee also on Oct. 14
- Cost: $10 for adults; $8 for children, students and seniors. All tickets will be $8 on Oct. 16.
Pine Hill Cemetery Lantern Tour, Oct. 12-13
- What: Presented by the Auburn Heritage Association, this tour will feature stops to visit 14 of Pine Hill’s “residents” played by costumed locals telling their stories along the cemetery’s lantern-lit pathways. Take a walk through Auburn’s oldest cemetery to learn about local history and enjoy a fall evening under the stars.
- Where: Pine Hill Cemetery, Auburn
- When: 7 to 9 p.m.
- Cost: $10 for adults; $5 for students
On the Tracks Fall 2017, Oct. 20
- What: In its 11th year, On the Tracks is the area’s longest-running food and libations trial. Sample sips and small bites from the area’s best restaurants as you walk the trail through historic downtown Opelika. The more than 25 retail establishments on the trail will serve wine and craft beer to the sound of live music in the streets. Tickets include a keepsake glass and complimentary snacks and beverages along the trail.
- Where: Downtown Opelika
- When: 6 to 11 p.m.
- Cost: $40 per ticket
Oktoberfest, Oct. 21
- What: In its eighth year, The Hotel at Auburn University’s annual Oktoberfest welcomes local, regional and national breweries to showcase a selection of more than 100 beers for sampling. Guests will also enjoy authentic German cuisine and wine and live music.
- Where: The Hotel at Auburn University & Dixon Conference Center, 241 S. College St., Auburn
- When: 4 to 9 p.m.
- Cost: $45 through Oct. 14, $50 Oct. 15-19
Fall Festival and Children’s Carnival, Oct. 24
- What: This festival designed for children 12 and younger will include entertainment, visits with local mascots, inflatables, games, activities and a hayride. Activities are accessible via individual purchase or through an all-access wristband.
- Where: Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center, 1001 Andrews Road, Opelika
- When: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
- Cost: $0.25 for each activity, or $10 for an all-access wristband
29th Annual Pumpkin Carve, Oct. 27
- What: Experience some of the most creative pumpkin carving around during this day-long event. Sponsored by the Auburn University Chapter of the American Institutedown of Architecture Students, carvers will gather in the courtyard of Dudley Hall and will work all day to carve extravagant pumpkins leading up to a pumpkin lighting at 6 p.m. that evening. Judges will select the best pumpkins and award prizes donated from local businesses.
- Where: Dudley Hall, 361 Graves Drive, Auburn
- When: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Cost: Free to attend. Silent auction, vendors and raffles will be included.
Pumpkins and Poker, Oct. 27
- What: The Auburn Downtown Merchants Association invites you to experience Halloween fun in downtown Auburn with a poker run and live music. Teams of players can purchase one poker hand, and then players are encouraged to visit each participating business to pick a sealed card to add to their “mystery” hand. The top winning hands will receive various levels of cash prizes.
- Where: Downtown Auburn
- When: 4 to 10 p.m.
- Cost: $10 per hand
Great Pumpkin Splash, Oct. 27
- What: The Sportsplex pool will turn into a floating pumpkin patch as children ages 6-12 pick their pumpkins to decorate will a fall theme. Pre-registration for this event is required by Oct. 24.
- Where: Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center
- When: 6 to 8 p.m.
- Cost: $4 per person
All In All Pink, Oct. 27
- What: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this Auburn University student-led event serves to support that initiative. The event intends to raise awareness for the cause as well as to serve as an opportunity for students to connect and interact with one another and other community members.
- Where: Auburn University Student Center Green Space, 255 Heisman Drive
- When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Cost: Free
