August 2017 events in Auburn and Opelika

In addition to being the hottest month of the year, August represents a month of firsts—the first days back to school, the first days remembering how the fall semester in auburn differs a summer without an entire college student population in town and, a saving grace for many—the first football games of the season. Though summer for the school population ends in August, in terms of a flurry of seasonal activities and time spent seeking relief from the summer heat, we’re still in the thick of it. Auburn Area Community Theatre Presents: Spamalot the Musical, August 4-6, 10-13

  • What: This cult classic revamped from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” recants the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table—with a comical twist.
  • Where: Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center, 222 E. Drake Avenue, Auburn
  • When: 7 p.m. August 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, with matinees on August 6 and 13 at 2 p.m.

  • Cost: $18 adults; $15 students and seniors

Barks & Brews, August 5

  • What: Sample Opelika-brewed beer while meeting your new four-legged family member at this Lee County Humane Society-sponsored dog adoption event.
  • Where: Red Clay Brewing Co., 704 N. Railroad Ave., Opelika
  • When: 3 to 5 p.m.

Sportsplex Kids Triathlon, August 5 

  • What: Children ages 6 to 15 are invited to compete in an age group-divided kids’ triathlon. In the 6 to 8 age group, participants will swim 50 yards, bike one-and-a-half miles and run 500 yards. In the 9 to 11 age group, participants will swim 100 yards, bike three miles and run one mile. In the 12-15 age group, participants will swim 150 yards, bike six miles and run two miles. Five-year-old children may participate in the Kids Triathlon or the Small Fry Tri.
  • Where: Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center, 1001 Andrews Road, Opelika
  • When: Transition and body marking starts at 6 a.m., with the 12-15 year-old division starting at 7:30 a.m.
  • Cost: $35 per child. Pre-registration required.

Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, August 10

  • What: Local businesses, organizations and individuals will compete in this adult spelling bee as a fundraiser for the Lee County Literacy Coalition. In rapid-fire fashion, participants will spell as many words as they can correctly in an allotted time period.
  • Where: Auburn Alumni Center, 317 S. College St., Auburn
  • When: 5 to 9 p.m.

Home Sweet Auburn, August 17

  • What: The Auburn Chamber of Commerce and Auburn University partner to introduce chamber member restaurants to incoming freshman and their families during this outdoor event. Last year’s event featured more than 700 attendees.
  • Where: Auburn University Student Center Green Space
  • When: 4 to 6 p.m.

Paint on the Patio, August 17

  • What: Perfect your painting skills at this outdoor painting class on the Ariccia Trattoria patio at The Hotel at Auburn University. Hosted by local artist Lauren Duncan with the LocaAL Market, this class will include the painting lesson, supplies and one cocktail. The restaurant will also be offering drink specials and snacks for the class.
  • Where: The Hotel at Auburn University, 241 S. College St. Auburn
  • When: 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Auburn Football Fan Day, August 19

  • What: Auburn Tiger fans will have the opportunity to interact with their favorite players and coaches during the annual Auburn Football Fan Day presented by Golden Flake. Notable guests include Coach Gus Malzahn, Aubie, the Tiger Paws and Auburn football, volleyball and soccer teams. Fans may bring one item to be signed.
  • Where: Indoor Practice Facility and Watson Field House, behind the Auburn Athletics Complex
  • When: 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Tails & Trails 5K Run/One-Mile Walk, August 19

  • What: The Auburn University Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association hosts its third annual dog-friendly 5K and walk to benefit the Alabama Veterinary Medical Foundation. Registration includes the 5K or fun run/walk, T-shirt and food and drinks.
  • Where: Town Creek Park, 1150 S. Gay St., Auburn
  • When: 7 to 9 a.m.
  • Cost: $20 until August 10; $25 from August 11-17 and $30 day-of, ending at 6:30 a.m. August 19

2nd Annual Make Music Day Alabama, August 22

  • What: This event is an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for having the World’s Largest Rock and Roll Band. Professional to amateur musicians are invited to participate in playing Sister Hazel’s, “All for You,” and Sister Hazel themselves will be on site to join in. Registration is free and open to all musicians. This event was postponed from its original July 2017 date due to weather.
  • Where: Gay Street Municipal Parking Lot
  • When: 6 p.m.

I Run Opelika Health Expo & 5K Run/Walk, August 26

  • What: This 5K was designed to raise awareness for obesity and diabetes in the state of Alabama along with other health-related issues in an effort to help the community live healthier lifestyles. In conjunction with the 5K run/walk, there will be a Health Expo featuring health screenings, education, group exercises and more. Proceeds from this event will benefit Cornerstone of East Alabama Medical Center.
  • Where: Lee County Courthouse Square, 215 S. Ninth St., Opelika
  • When: 7 to 11 a.m.
  • Cost: $25 for the run/walk through August 26; $35 day of the race
