Active Auburn's Mayor's 100-Mile Challenge

In Auburn and the surrounding area, we are fortunate to live in a community that promotes an active lifestyle—and that gives us a selection of diverse opportunities to stay physically healthy—from mountain biking trails at Chewacla to a calendar full of 5Ks and fun runs throughout the year. This weekend, Auburn celebrates the kick off of yet another event intended to highlight health and wellness among our area’s citizens: Active Auburn’s Mayor’s 100-Mile Challenge.

As part of Active Auburn’s Mayor’s 100-Mile Challenge, participants are charged with the task of walking, running, swimming, biking or even dancing the course of 100 miles in 100 days from Aug. 26 to Dec. 3, 2017. The event will start with a kickoff this Saturday, Aug. 26 at Town Creek Park.

The kickoff event will feature a selection of health and wellness-related activities catering to the entire family, starting with a sunrise yoga class at the pavilion at 7 a.m. led by instructors from The Yoga Room. Official festivities will start at 8 a.m. and will include music, games and exercise demonstrations by Max Fitness and Orangetheory Fitness on the park’s outdoor exercise equipment.

The event will also invite attendees to take one-mile walks through the park to log the first mile in Active Auburn’s Mayor’s 100-Mile Challenge. Each walk will be led by a local “celebrity.” Mayor Bill Ham himself will lead the first walk starting at 8:30 a.m. along with Auburn City Council members Ron Anders and Gene Dulaney, and walks will continue every half hour—with the last beginning at 11:30 a.m. Other walk leaders include:

  • Council member Beth Witten
  • Auburn University Track and Field Coach Ralph Spry
  • Members of the Auburn University Track and Field coaching staff and team
  • Downtown Auburn coordinator Jessica Kohn
  • City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Director Becky Richardson
  • City of Auburn Community Programs Coordinator Gabby Meredith and
  • City of Auburn Community Programs Coordinator and Lee County Special Olympics Director Elizabeth Kaufman

Throughout the 100 days of the challenge, Active Auburn will host various monthly events focusing on fitness and recreation to help participants on their way to achieving their 100-mile goals. Whether you stroll, swim or shimmy your way to the finish line, challenge yourself this fall to log 100 miles!
