May 2017 Events in Auburn and Opelika

The month of May signifies both the beginning and the end. For many, it’s the end of the school year—from kindergartners to college graduates. For everyone, it’s the start of the summer. And whether that means anything to you or not in terms of travel, hitting the pool or getting a tan, it at least means in Auburn and Opelika, Alabama that there is no shortage of events on the calendar. Summer Swing in Opelika, May 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 

  • What: Every Tuesday evening May through July, Opelika Parks and Recreation hosts a free outdoor concert at 7 p.m. in Opelika’s Municipal Park. The 13-week concert series features a range of musical genres including jazz, soul, R&B, oldies, blues, gospel, big band, country, folk and more. The May schedule includes, in order: Opelika High School Symphonic, Concert and Jazz Bands, Lee-Scott Jazz Band, Kidd Blue, East Alabama Community Band and Crossroads.
  • Where: Opelika Municipal Park, 1032 S. Railroad Ave., Opelika
  • When: 7 p.m. (hamburgers and hot dogs available from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.)
  • Cost: Free

Spring Sundown Concert Series, May 4, 11, 18 and 25

  • What: The City of Auburn hosts a free outdoor concert every Thursday throughout the month of May at Town Creek Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy an evening of entertainment. The schedule includes, in order: Electric Rangers, Cool Water, H2O Featuring Louisiana Fred and Soul Therapy Featuring DJ Hollywood
  • Where: Town Creek Park, 1150 S. Gay St., Auburn.
  • When: 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

May the Fourth Be With You: Star Wars Night at Samford Pool, May 4

  • What: Auburn City Pools will host its first Float-N-Movie event of the 2017 season while celebrating Star Wars Day at Samford Pool. Enjoy a screening of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” a visit from the 501st Legion, photo booth and free glow sticks. Make sure to bring a float from home!
  • Where: Samford Pool, 328 E. Samford Ave., Auburn
  • When: 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. (doors open at 7:30; movie begins at 7:45; doors close at 8)
  • Cost: $2 per person or free with a Splash Pass

12th Annual Garden in the Park, May 6

  • What: Vendors will display and sell handmade or natural items including pottery, plants, children’s clothes, jewelry and picture frames. The event will also feature live entertainment by local dance groups and schools and Farmer Brown’s Party Animals for children to feed and pet.
  • Where: Opelika Municipal Park, 1032 S. Railroad Ave., Opelika
  • When: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Cost: Free, but food donations will be accepted for the Food Bank of East Alabama

9th Annual Kentucky Derby Auction & Dinner, May 6

  • What: Wear your extravagant hats, sip mint juleps, eat great food and watch the Kentucky Derby—all while supporting Storybook Farm. The event will feature guest speakers Kim and Tim Hudson, a live auction and giveaways.
  • Where: Storybook Farm, 300 Cusseta Road, Opelika
  • When: 4 to 8 p.m.
  • Cost: $85 individual, $1,000 for table of 10

The Junior Adventure Challenge, May 6

  • What: Young adventurers are invited to conquer an outdoor obstacle course designed for ages 4 to 12. Two start lines will divide the ages, and then participants will meet in the middle to tackle all-ages obstacles. Vendors and activities will also be on site.
  • Where: Kiesel Park, 520 Chadwick Lane, Auburn
  • When: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Cost: $20

Walk the Walk 5K, May 13

  • What: This annual 5K supports Women’s Hope Medical Clinic, a non-profit ministry that provides resources for individuals who are pregnant or who have sexual health concerns.
  • Where: Town Creek Park, 1150 S. Gay St., Auburn
  • When: 8 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Cost: $25

Habitat Around the Hearth, May 19

  • What: The Auburn-Opelika Habitat for Humanity invites the community to the Bottling Plant Event Center for live jazz, a silent auction, live auction and cash bar.
  • Where: Bottling Plant Event Center, 614 N. Railroad Ave., Opelika
  • When: 6 to 9 p.m.
  • Cost: $35

43rd Annual Old Car Show, May 20

  • What: The East Alabama Old Car Club hosts its 43rd annual show, including competitions for various trophy classes. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 100 registrants.
  • Where: USA Town Center, 1220 Fox Run Ave., Opelika
  • When: 8 a.m. (registration); 10 a.m. (judging); 2:30 p.m. (trophies awarded)
  • Cost: $15 for first entry; $3 for additional entries

Bluegrass on the Plains, May 29 to June 4

  • What: Bluegrass fans are invited to gather for a seven-day festival of live music, a Memorial Day barbecue, a potluck, arts and crafts, vendors and workshops.
  • Where: University Station RV Resort, 3076 Highway 14, Auburn
  • When: Times vary
  • Cost: Day tickets range from $15 to $35 advance and from $20 to $40 day of. A five-day pass (Wednesday through Saturday) is $105 advance and $125 day of. Children 12 and younger get in free.
