Pool weather is upon us! That means it’s time to throw on your suit, pack your towels and pool toys, later up with sun screen and decide on your destination. If you don’t have a private pool in your backyard (or a good friend who doesn’t mind the company), then you may be wondering where you can take the family in the Auburn and Opelika area for an afternoon dip or where you can go to exercise with an evening swim. Check out this guide to public pools in Auburn and Opelika to plan out your next pool day!

AUBURN

Samford Pool

  • About: Located behind Auburn Junior High School, Samford Pool celebrated its 40th year of summer swimming in 2016. The pool’s entrance is off Wrights Mill Road with parking lots that exit onto Samford Avenue. The complex features three separate pool areas: the main pool, diving well with two high dives and two low dives and a children’s pool.
  • Location: 465 Wrights Mill Road
  • Open: Early Bird Season is Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. May 16 through May 25. The Summer Pool Season officially kicks off at Samford Pool Saturday, May 27. Hours will change starting Sunday, August 6. Summer Pool Season ends Sunday, Oct. 1.
  • Hours: Vary depending on day, date and special events. Click here for full explanation of hours.
  • Cost: $2 per person daily (children 1 and under free); Splash Passes (season passes) are $50 each or $125 for a family pass

Drake Pool

  • About: Located behind Drake Middle School, Drake Pool, built in 2004, features two separate pool areas: the main pool and a children’s pool. Parking is available next to the pool in the staff parking lot for Drake Middle School. A gravel overflow lot is across Spencer Avenue.
  • Location: 653 Spencer Avenue
  • Open: Monday, May 29 through Sunday, July 30
  • Hours: Vary depending on day, date and special events. Click here for full explanation of hours.
  • Cost: $2 per person daily (children 1 and under free); Splash Passes (season passes) are $50 each or $125 for a family pass

 

OPELIKA

SportsPlex Pool

  • About: Part of the overall 75,000 square-foot Opelika SportsPlex and Aquatic Center that opened in 2009, this indoor swim facility features a competitive pool and lap pool, whirl pool and splash park.
  • Location: 1001 Andrews Road
  • Open: Pool and splash park now open. The splash park is open through Sept. 18, weather permitting.
  • Hours: 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday (pool closes at 6 p.m. on Wednesday); 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Saturday; 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Hours may vary based on day, date and special events. Click here for a full explanation of hours and for splash park hours.
  • Cost: Free for members; $4 per day non-members

Covington Recreation Center Pool

  • About: Located near Carver Primary School, this outdoor pool is part of Opelika’s Covington Recreation Center, which houses a gymnasium, club rooms and a kitchen available to rent and use.
  • Location: 213 Carver Ave.
  • Open: June 3
  • Hours: 2 to 5 p.m. daily
  • Cost: $2 per day
