10 Ways to Step Up Your Spring Cleaning in 2017

The spring season signifies rebirth, renewal and refreshment—concepts that can also be applied to the cleanliness of your home. Spring cleaning exists for a reason—not only because it coincides perfectly with the themes of spring, but also because it is the ideal time to open and air out our homes after being cooped up all winter.

You likely know the obvious when it comes to cleaning—dusting, mopping and vacuuming. But here are a few ways you can step up your spring cleaning in 2017 and go above and beyond the expected in terms of seasonal home refreshment this year.

  • Wash your windows. Take the opportunity during your spring cleaning routine to scrub those smudges and spots off of your home’s windows both inside and out. If you have the option, wash your windows on a cloudy day so the sun won’t dry the cleanser you are using before you are finished wiping it off.
  • Spot clean your walls and baseboards. Smudges or scrapes on your painted walls and baseboards can usually be removed with just a damp cloth and water. If that does not work, add a little dishwashing soap, or try a product like a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
  • Clean out the fridge. Start by going through the food in your refrigerator and throw away anything that is old or expired. Remove your refrigerator’s shelving, and clean it with warm, soapy water. Wipe down the interior of the fridge before returning the shelves to their places.
  • Shine your stainless steel. These days, many kitchens come with the desired stainless steel fleet of appliances. Despite its name, stainless steel does get smudgy sometimes. Use a wax-based aerosol spray to shine up your stainless steel this spring.
  • Don’t forget your dishwasher. Though its purpose is to clean, a dishwasher gets dirty sometimes too. Spot scrub to remove any food you see on the sides and bottom of the device, and then run a cycle with a cleanser specifically made to clean your dishwasher.
  • Organize your closet. Yes, organizing can also be considered cleaning because it forces you to go through your stuff and get rid of things you no longer need. The first step to organizing your closet is doing just that. Once you have whittled down your belongings, determine where you may want to add shelving, shoe racks or other types of organizers to make your closet more accessible.
  • Vacuum your mattress. While you are washing your bedding, take a minute to clean your mattress. Use the appropriate tool on your vacuum to go over the surface and sides of your mattress. You can also spot clean stains with upholstery cleaners.
  • Deep clean carpets and upholstery. You can rent a carpet cleaner to shampoo your carpets and your upholstery to remove dirt and germs. Practice first in a small, out-of-the-way area to make sure you have a good handle on the machine.
  • Dust your ceiling fans. You may not think to clean here often because you don’t see it, but the top of your ceiling fan blades is a favorite place for dust to collect. Make sure your fan is off and that the blades have come to a complete stop. Use a water-moistened microfiber cloth or towel to wipe down the blades, and then repeat with a dry cloth.
  • Prepare your patio furniture. Especially if it has been sitting outside all winter, your patio furniture may need some cleaning to get it in top shape for spring and summer use. Add some liquid dish detergent to warm water, and use it to wipe down outdoor tables and chairs. Give everything a final rinse with a spray of the hose.

Start the spring season off with a clean slate when it comes to your home! Spring cleaning can help clear your head and provide you a healthier and more pleasant living environment for yourself, your family and your friends.
