Auburn is always growing, and 2017 is no exception. A new commercial building could be popping up on the downtown Auburn landscape pending future approvals by the Auburn City Council. The new event center proposed for downtown Auburn would exist on West Magnolia Avenue in between Pieology and Toomer’s Place—where a parking lot exists currently.
The three-story, 21,329 square-foot building would feature an event space and balcony with a 500 to 600 person capacity on the third floor, a high-ceiling lounge area with a 1,100-person capacity on its first floor and a second-floor mezzanine area connecting the two floors. The building would be about 40 feet tall and would have an alley on the side facing Toomer’s Place.
Plans are for Quixotes Bar and Grill, currently located on North College Street, to move to the first floor of the new event center.
At its second January meeting, the Auburn City Council approved a conditional use request that a lounge and event center be allowed in the Urban Core (downtown) zoning district. Now, steps are being taken to negotiate a development agreement, which the Council has asked to include solutions for parking, a plan for an alleyway between the new building and the back of the businesses that face College Street, and the Dumpsters that those businesses currently use on the property being relocated.
Construction elsewhere in downtown Auburn is ongoing. The Evolve apartments at the corner of Wright Street and West Glenn Avenue are scheduled to open to residents in Fall 2017, and the city of Auburn recently completed a streetscape on North College Street, adding parking spaces on the east side of the street across from Live Oaks restaurant.
Upgrades and improvements happening all over Auburn reflect why it is such a coveted place to live, work and play!
