With the holiday season behind us, many of us are in the process of re-settling into our regular routines as we embrace the start of a New Year. Even though all of the excitement of the Christmas season is packed away for another 12 months, in the Auburn-Opelika area, January still offers us plenty of opportunities to keep ourselves entertained! Here are Ryan’s Top 10 January events happening in the Auburn-Opelika area in January!

  • Blood Drive, Jan. 10
    • What: The Auburn Chamber of Commerce will host a blood drive for Life South Community Blood Centers. All donors will receive a recognition item and cholesterol screening. Donors must be 17 or older (16 with written parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and show a photo I.D.
    • Where: Bloodmobile outside the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, 714 E. Glenn Ave., Auburn
    • When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Souper Bowl Kickoff for the 2017 Relay for Life Season, Jan. 14
    • What: The Lee County American Cancer Society Relay for Life chapter kicks off its annual fight against cancer. The chapter is seeking volunteers to start a team, lead the event, participate, recruit and more. Gather information at this kickoff event.
    • Where: EAMC Education Center, 2027 Pepperell Parkway, Opelika
    • When: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Benefit Concert Against Domestic Violence, “Stronger Than Before,” Jan. 14
    • What: A benefit concert for all ages featuring guest speaker and former Clemson Tiger football player Jock McKissic and artists Kady Rain, Unanimous, Dustin Steen, Centric, Jessie Lynn and Truth. Refreshments will be for sale.
    • Where: The Bottling Plant Event Center, 614 N. Railroad Ave., Opelika
    • When: Doors open at 5:30, event starts at 6 p.m.
    • Cost: $10 in advance; $15 at the door
  • The GIs of Comedy, Jan. 18
    • What: Comedy show featuring members of the armed forces including Jose Sarouy (Air Force), Jody Fuller (Army) and PJ Wash (Navy). Show is PG-13.
    • Where: The Bottling Plant Event Center, 614 N. Railroad Ave., Opelika
    • When: Doors open at 6 p.m.; show starts at 7 p.m.
    • Cost: $20 in advance; $25 at door. Tables of four can be reserved for $150, and tables of 10 can be reserved for $300.
  • David Wilcox in Concert at Sundilla, Jan. 19
    • What: Renowned folk artist David Wilcox opens the 2017 Sundilla Concert Series. Justin Farren, 2016 Kerrville New Folk Award winner, will open the show.
    • Where: Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 450 Thach Ave., Auburn
    • When: 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
    • Cost: $20 with tickets available at Spicer’s Music, Blooming Colors, Music Town Records and online at sundillamusic.com.
  • Little House Concerts at Standard Deluxe, Jan. 22, 29
    • What: Live music in the Pea Ridge Listening Room at Standard Deluxe in Waverly. Jan. 22 will feature Peter Case, founding member of the Nerves and leader of the Plimsouls. Jan. 29 will feature Jontavious Willis, a 20-year-old, self-taught multi-instrumentalist from Greenville, Ga.
    • Where: Standard Deluxe, 1015 Mayberry Ave., Waverly
    • When: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
    • Cost: $15 in advance; $20 day of (if available)
  • 5th Annual Polar Plunge, Jan. 28
    • What: A benefit for the Lee County Special Olympics, the Polar Plunge will feature participants plunging into the icy cold January waters of Samford Pool.
    • Where: Samford Pool, 328 E. Samford Ave., Auburn
    • When: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • 3rd Annual Alabama Oyster Social, Jan. 28
    • What: A celebration of the Alabama oyster and the team at the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory. A roster of all-star chefs will provide fresh shucked samples washed down with libations from Back Forty Beer, Cathead Vodka and more. Tasting tables will feature southern fishermen, farmers, foragers, butchers, brewers, distillers, vitners and shellfish enthusiasts. All proceeds will benefit the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory.
    • Where: The Red Barn at the Agricultural Heritage Park at Auburn University
    • When: 6 p.m.
    • Cost: $75 per all-access pass
  • Winter Brewfest, Rhythm & Brews, Jan. 28
    • What: Beer festival featuring 15 breweries, food from Johnny Brusco’s Pizza and live music by Blackberry Possum & Randall Bramblett Band.
    • Where: The Bottling Plant Event Center, 614 N. Railroad Ave., Opelika
    • When: 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
    • Cost: $25 in advance; $30 at the door
  • Young Professionals Kickoff, Jan. 31
    • What: The Auburn Chamber of Commerce introduces the all-new Auburn Young Professionals program available to ages 21-40.
    • Where: Moore’s Mill Club, 1957 Fairway Drive, Auburn
    • When: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
