When going outside gets pushed down your priority list due to too-cold or too-stormy weather, being confined to the indoors tends to make us go a little stir crazy at times.

However, you can make the most of your inside time by committing yourself to being productive, committing yourself to having fun, or simply committing yourself to not committing to anything at all!

This winter, when the outdoors become undesirable, here are six ways that you can combat cabin fever.

  • Learn a new skill. Dig up that nice camera that you have never used or break out the recipe books. Mastering a new skill definitely falls on the productive list of things to do when you are cooped up. Take on a musical instrument, learn the basics of photography or try something new in the kitchen.
  • Fix something. Remember that cabinet door that is falling off its hinge, or the hole in the wall that needs to be plastered and painted? There’s no better time than a day spent indoors to take on those easy repairs that you’ve been meaning to do forever.
  • Plan your next vacation. Vacations give us something to look forward to, and planning a spring or summer trip in the winter is a great way to beat the winter blues. The anticipation we experience ahead of a fun trip is often more enjoyable than actually taking one.
  • Go through your stuff and get rid of things you no longer want or need. Try the four box method: put out a box for stuff you will Keep, Donate/Sell, Store and Trash. If you have sentimental attachments to things that you know you really should get rid of, you can always take a picture of that item and then get rid of it.
  • Binge watch a new show. These days, this is the go-to for many of us when we have free time to spend at home. Apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu make it easier than ever to start a new show and continue watching it for hours on end.
  • Play games with your family or friends. Card games, board games, games you make up—these are sources of entertainment that you should not overlook. Bond with your kids, friends or significant other over the game of your choice.
