The upcoming holiday season is an excellent reminder that there are several avenues in our area through which we can help out our fellow community members in need.
As the Iron Bowl pits Auburn and Alabama fans against one another on the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year, another competition between the two rival schools bodes well to help make sure that everyone has a holiday meal.
Each year, locals drop canned goods into collection barrels across the area for the Beat Bama Food Drive, hosted by the Food Bank of East Alabama.
If you are a Crimson Tide supporter and the name throws you off, you can refer to it by its Tuscaloosa-based name, the “Beat Auburn, Beat Hunger” initiative.
The food drive is going on now through Nov. 16, and there are drop-off locations for canned goods all over Auburn and Opelika. In addition to donating food, you can also contribute monetary donations by visiting the Beat Bama Food Drive website.
While the food drive does represent one of the greatest rivalries in the nation as a contest between Auburn University and the University of Alabama, no matter what team you support, the drive overridingly represents support for the fight against hunger across the state.
Locally, the Food Bank of East Alabama on a regular basis feeds thousands in our area who are suffering from food insecurity. The organization works by storing donated perishable and non-perishable food items and then distributing food through member agencies that serve people in need.
So while you are out grocery shopping this month, pick up an extra can of food or two to drop in the food bank barrel by the door of your favorite store. Or, go through your pantry and pick out items that you think could benefit a hungry person or family.
Whether you’re shouting “War Eagle” or “Roll Tide” on Iron Bowl Saturday this year, we can all unite to help put an end to hunger, and supporting the food drive is a great place to start.
There are only four days left in this year’s drive, so get out and donate today!
