Fall and Winter Energy-Saving Tips

Outside temperatures in the Auburn-Opelika area are finally starting to cool down, and before long it will be time to adjust the thermostat and break out the space heaters to keep warm at home. But with the heat cranked up inside also comes the increased energy bill to match. If you want to avoid paying excessive costs to keep your home comfortable this fall and winter, consider these Fall and Winter energy saving tips.

Use the sun. Open your curtains during the day to allow natural sunlight to heat your home. Close the curtains at night to keep warmth inside.

Cover drafty windows and doors. Taping clear plastic film on the inside of your window frames during the fall and winter can help keep your home insulated. Tight-fitting and heavy drapes or shades can also improve energy efficiency.

Check for and seal leaks. A leak allowing outside air access to your home can be devastating to your energy costs. Leaks can appear around utility cut-throughs for pipes, gaps around the chimney, recessed lights in ceilings and around doors and windows. Add caulk or weatherstripping to stop leaks.

Adjust your water heater. Turning down the temperature of your water heater to the “warm” (120 degrees F) rather than “hot” setting can help dramatically reduce energy costs. Water heating accounts for about 18% of the energy consumption in your home.

Regulate your thermostat accordingly. If you lower your thermostat 10 or 15 degrees while you are asleep or away from your home, you can save roughly 10% per year on your heating and cooling bills. While you are at home, keep the thermostat at the lowest temperature at which you remain comfortable.

These are free to inexpensive options that you can employ immediately to reduce your energy costs as it gets cold outside!
