The Dos and Don'ts of Holiday Home Decorating

Unless you are one of those people who jumps straight from Halloween into Christmas, it is likely that now that Thanksgiving has passed you are starting to pull the storage boxes out of the attic full of tangled light strands, boxes of ornaments, ceramic Nativity figurines and all of the other components of your Christmas decorating arsenal.

Whether you consider yourself a holiday home decorating expert or you are decorating for the first time, consider this list of dos and don’ts when it comes to getting your décor right for the season.

DO: Put up Christmas lights. Everywhere. Outside the house, on the tree, on the mantle. The lights serve as the glowing foundation for all of the other decorations you plan to showcase.

DON’T: Overdo it or let lights become hazardous. Too many lights can not only annoy your neighbors, but they can present safety issues. Make sure to inspect lights for loose bulbs or protruding wires, and make sure light strands are placed so that someone could not easily trip over them.

DO: Hang your children’s homemade Christmas ornaments. These personal touches are what make a tree unique to you and your family.

DON’T: Clutter your home with too many of your own holiday crafts. Less is often more when it comes to seasonal décor, and simple decorations can not only look better, but they can save you time and money.

DO: Clean up your house before putting decorations out. Remove clutter to make room for decorations, vacuum and give your home a good deep cleaning so you will be able to show off your décor in its best light.

DON’T: Obsess over your home being perfect. Holidays can be stressful enough, so you don’t need to add to that by freaking out when an ornament breaks or when a section of the light strand is out.

DO: Use the traditional Christmas-associated red and green in your color scheme. Let’s be honest—it wouldn’t be Christmas without that classic red and green combo.

DON’T: Confine yourself to just those two colors. Be creative with gold, silver, navy—and even more out-there colors like purple or pink. Try decorating a tree with light blue and white, or with purple and gold.

DO: Decorate the rooms that your guests will spend the most time in, including the powder room.

DON’T: Think you have to tackle every single room in your house. If you don’t care about having a Santa statue in your bedroom, then find a place for him somewhere else and don’t waste the time.

DO: Adorn your yard and front porch with decorations like light-up deer and pinecone wreaths. Also, pay attention to the rules of your Homeowner’s Association, if you have one. Some HOA’s dictate the types of lights and yard decorations you can use.

DON’T: Construct an army of large inflatable snowmen and Santa’s. One or two is OK if you enjoy these types of decorations, but ultimately less is more when it comes to inflatables.

DO: Have a great time decorating with your friends and family!

DON’T: Forget to take down your decorations before Valentine’s Day! (And hopefully, before that).

Get in the holiday spirit by taking a drive around your neighborhood in December to see what others have done with their holiday décor!
