Adding Privacy to Your Outdoor Space

Do you live in a neighborhood where backyard privacy from your neighbors is few and far between? You shouldn’t have to feel confined to the inside just because there isn’t a fence separating your neighbor’s yard from yours.

Whether you have an issue with tight lots, too-close traffic or noisy neighbors, there are ways to create an outside space for yourself that boasts the kind of peaceful, open-air atmosphere that you crave.

Here are a few suggestions for you to try:

  • Walls and fences. We’ll start with the obvious here. If you feel that your outdoor space could benefit from a wall or fence blocking your view of the neighbors to create more intimacy, then it’s a good way to go. A wooden fence is the most common type, but if the thought of putting together a wooden fence from scratch scares you, don’t worry—you can buy prefabricated sections that connect together for easier assembly. You could also try vinyl, stone or brick. If you use harsher materials like stone or brick, try softening the look with plants or vines.
  • Barriers created with evergreen hedges provide a nice natural feel to your outdoor space. Achieve a fuller visual effect by planting in a zig-zag pattern. Do some research to find out which hedges require less upkeep if you do not want to spend a long time on maintenance.
  • Decorative screens and lattice. Though they may not block out the other side entirely, a decorative screen or lattice piece can help section off space and create visual interest.
  • A pergola-style roof can also add visual interest, privacy and even noise reduction while still maintaining an open feel. Use vines to fill in and add foliage.
  • Water features. If excessive noise from either the surrounding roads or the people next door are your main issues, then the sound of running water could be a welcome replacement. Water features can range from tabletop models to costly, custom-constructed waterfalls or ponds.
