Ryan's Top 10 October Events in Auburn Opelika

Even though according to the calendar the official start of fall happened last month, here in the South we really start to get in the swing of fall when October rolls around!

There’s so much going on this month in the Auburn-Opelika area. From its fall festivals to tricks and treats, October is a month that we welcome with open arms. Bring on the pumpkin carving, hay rides and candy!

  • Celebrate the Arts on the Hill, Oct. 2: Bring a chair or blanket and your appreciation for art and creativity to Pebble Hill to celebrate the kickoff of Arts & Humanities Month starting at 3 p.m. Sponsored by the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities, the Jan Dempsey Arts Center and the Auburn Arts Association, this event is free and family-friendly. It will feature art activities for children, tours of the historic 1847 Scott-Yarbrough house and a performance by the Auburn University/Community Orchestra at 4 p.m.
  • On the Tracks, Oct. 7: Get acquainted with Historic Downtown Opelika by following the tasting trail through the food vendors, shops and galleries that contribute to the character of the area. Each trail stop will feature a sample of a different type of beer, wine and snacks. Enjoy live music along the trail and in the middle of Railroad Avenue. Event starts at 6 p.m.
  • 12th Annual Think Pink Walk, Oct. 8: The East Alabama Medical Center hosts its annual walk to raise money for women in the community through the EAMC Breast Health for Underserved Women program. The one-mile walk takes place at Courthouse Square in downtown Opelika. The deadline for pre-registration is Oct. 3, or register the morning of the event starting at 8 a.m.
  • Puppypalooza, Oct. 8: Bring your four-legged family members to Kiesel Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Lee County Humane Society’s biggest event of the year. Formerly “Woofstock,” Puppypalooza features family-friendly activities like a kids play area, live music, food vendors, raffle, pet costume contest and more. Don’t forget to check out LCHS’s adoptable pets at the event!
  • Fall Family Fun Day, Oct. 8: The Kreher Preserve and Nature Center in Auburn invites you and your family out to celebrate the fall season from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day will feature music, a scarecrow decorating contest, pumpkin painting, face painting, storytelling and discovery hikes led by KPNC nature specialists. Admission is free, and food trucks will be available for food purchases.
  • Oktoberfest at The Hotel at Auburn University, Oct. 8: Enjoy samples from more than 100 craft breweries, live music and all things German! From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., the parking lot of The Hotel at Auburn University will turn into a site for not only beer sampling, but where attendees can try Oktoberfest dining staples and wine selections.
  • Jason Dufner Foundation’s 2016 Celebrity Golf Classic, Oct. 21: This charity golf tournament raises money to help end childhood hunger in Lee County. The Jason Dufner Foundation partners with local, regional and national organizations for the event.
  • Fall Festival and Children’s Carnival, Oct. 27: Children are invited to have Halloween fun at the Opelika SportsPlex Soccer Fields. Guests can wear costumes and bring a treat bag, visit with local mascots and enjoy a hayride, games, rides, prizes and entertainment. The event is from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and admission is free.
  • Pioneer Day at Loachapoka, Oct. 29: Formerly known as the Syrup Sopping Festival, Pioneer Day is a nine-hour festival that gives you a taste of historic culture. The event features syrup making, mules grinding cane, cloth-making and weaving demonstrations, musical entertainment, Native American dancing, break making, soap making and other old-time crafting. Indulge in delicious southern food such as sweet potato biscuits, collards and barbecue, and tour the 140-year-old Trade Center Museum, where you can watch blacksmiths work. Admission is free to this event, which lasts from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • 16th Annual Downtown Trick or Treat, Oct. 31: Come out for the best community Trick-Or-Treat around! The City of Auburn will host its annual Downtown Trick or Treat from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Auburn. Trick-or-Treaters will get their treats from downtown merchants while listening to music by DJ Ozz. The event will also feature a costume contest.
