As you and your family plan out which Disney princesses, superheroes or scary creatures you are going to be for Halloween this year, you also need to decide where you are going to spend Halloween weekend and night to show off all of your best-dressed costume-crafting efforts.
Across Auburn and Opelika, there are several frightfully-themed events for both your avid Trick-or-Treaters and adult partygoers alike.

- Fall Festival and Costume Bash, Oct. 22: This all-day event in downtown Opelika will start with a family-friendly Fall Festival from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a costume party at 8 p.m. at Red Clay Brewing Company. The festival will include games, a Kids Corner, blue ribbon pie contest, pumpkin carving and more.
- Pumpkins & Poker, Oct. 28: The Downtown Auburn Merchants Association hosts Pumpkins & Poker from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Auburn. Participants will visit 10 businesses and pick up one card at each. The finish line will be at the Quixote’s stage, where judges will open the sealed cards. The best hand of five cards on the leaderboard will win. An adult costume contest will start at 8 p.m., and prizes will be given for the three best costumes.
- ‘Tour de Fright’ Haunted Bike Ride, Oct. 28: The Opelika SportsPlex invites children 12 and younger to take a ride with their parents on the haunted walking trail from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, and bikes, trikes and scooters are welcome.
- 28th Annual Pumpkin Carve, Oct. 28: The annual fundraising event hosted by the Auburn Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students will take place in Dudley Courtyard on Auburn University’s campus from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Judges from the community and university will select the best-carved pumpkins and award prizes donated from local businesses. Carving will begin at 9 a.m., pumpkins will be lighted at 6 p.m., and winners will be announced at 7 p.m., followed by an auction of pumpkins at 8 p.m.
- Haunted Auburn Walking Tour, Oct. 28, 29: Join hosts John-Mark Poe and Brandon T. Stoker as they lead you around Auburn’s haunted spots and tell you the stories associated with them. There will be two tours each night (6 p.m. and 8 p.m.) and the event is free and open to the public. Meet your hosts by the two eagles near the Toomer’s Oaks.
- Zombie Run 5K, Oct. 29: The run will start at 8 a.m. in Auburn at the Old Pin Oaks Golf Course. Call 334-759-7030 for more information.
- John Emerald Halloween Party, Oct. 29-30: John Emerald Distillery in Opelika will host a night of Halloween fun from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The event will features bands Lady Legs and Cherry Motel, a costume contest and distillery dance party. Monetary prizes will be awarded for various costume categories.
- Hoops & Halloween Fan Day, Oct. 30: The Auburn men’s and women’s basketball teams with head coaches Bruce Pearl and Terri Williams-Flournoy will host a Halloween-themed fan fest event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. with Aubie, Auburn cheerleaders and Tiger Paws. The day will include activities, autographs, speeches by both coaches, a kids’ costume contest, inflatables, mini-pumpkin painting and more.
- 16th Annual Downtown Trick or Treat, Oct. 31: Come out for the best community Trick-Or-Treat around! The City of Auburn will host its annual Downtown Trick or Treat from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Auburn. Trick-or-Treaters will get their treats from downtown merchants while listening to music by DJ Ozz. The event will also feature a costume contest.
