Staging Your Home for Success

When you’re getting your house ready to show off to potential buyers, you need to make sure it’s a space that makes them feel like home. Here are a few key components to staging your home for success so that it will appeal to the highest number of buyers possible.

Clean thoroughly. There’s not much worse when it comes to looking at a home to purchase than seeing a floor that hasn’t been vacuumed or shelves that haven’t been dusted. Unless you’re an expert cleaner, you might choose to invest in a professional house cleaning prior to showing your home.

Remove clutter. Making your home clean does not just involve the basics. You need to remove clutter so that your home has the appearance of a model home. Do not just shove everything into a closet or in a cabinet, however, because buyers will be looking there, too. Box up and store things in an attic or storage unit for the time being.

Depersonalize. Part of removing clutter has to do with doing away with personal effects like family photos or eclectic knick-knacks while your home is showing. Your goal is to allow your potential buyers to be able to picture themselves living in the home, which calls for a clean, put-together decorating motif.

Create a cozy feel. Utilize lighting to your advantage. Choose lamps in addition to overhead lighting to make a room feel more inviting. Opening up blinds and curtains to allow for the flow of natural light into the space can also help.

Add the illusion of extra space. Mirrors are a great and easy way to make a room appear that it has more square footage than it actually does. You can also employ paint to create the illusion of openness. Use the same paint color across adjoining rooms, and choose lighter paint colors. Also, try matching your curtains to your wall color. In addition to paint, less-bulky furniture helps create space. Try glass tables or sofas with exposed legs.
