For many of us living on the Plains, fall means football— Friday night lights across East Alabama, the return of the Auburn Tigers to Jordan-Hare Stadium and a sea of orange and blue populating the local landscape on Saturdays. For others, fall is simply an indicator of the weather’s impending change (though summer extends through September in Alabama). It’s a time to pack away the pool floats until next season and get ready for the rest of the year as we look toward the last part of 2016. Across Auburn and Opelika, there’s no shortage of activities to fill your calendars throughout the month of September. Here are Ryan’s Top 10 September Events in Auburn-Opelika.

  • On the Town: Downtown Opelika’s Night Out, Sept. 2: Enjoy a night out in Opelika with shops open until 9 p.m., live music and an AU pep rally at 6:30 p.m. Downtown Opelika businesses will be offering special deals throughout the evening.
  • AUsome Amphibians & Reptiles, Sept. 2, 23: The Kreher Preserve and Nature Center will give a one-hour presentation on amphibians and reptiles found in Alabama at 4:30 p.m. This hands-on program with live animals is catered to children and their families. Admission is $5 per person, with children 3 and under getting in free. All proceeds benefit the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center.
  • Football, Fans and Feathers Raptor Educational Program, Sept. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30: The Southeastern Raptor Center will present a raptor show and flight demonstration including hawks, falcons, eagles and other birds of prey. The event will take place on Pratt-Carden Drive off Shug Jordan Parkway at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person and benefit the Southeastern Raptor Center.
  • AuburnServes Volunteer Fair, Sept. 9: Auburn University’s Office of Public Service will host the AuburnServes Fall Volunteer Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students and faculty will have the opportunity to learn about volunteer service learning events with more than 20 local and statewide non-profit organizations.
  • West Glenn Block Party, Sept. 9: Kick off the second football weekend of the season with West Glenn Plaza from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event will be held on the patio of West Glenn Plaza and will feature live music, giveaways, raffles, corn hole and more.
  • Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, Sept. 13: Spelling bees aren’t just for elementary students. Hosted by the East Alabama Chapter of the Public Relations Council of Alabama, the event will take place at the Auburn Alumni Center at 5 p.m. The community is invited to watch and enjoy hors d’ouevres, cocktails and door prizes. Tickets are $20 at the door, and raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. The annual event raises money for the Lee County Literacy Coalition.
  • Nathan Bell in Concert at Sundilla, Sept. 16: Songwriter Nathan Bell makes his Sundilla debut at 7:30 pm. at Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Bell has shared the stage with artists like Townes Van Zandt, Emmylou Harris, Kathy Mattea, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Ricky Skaggs, Taj Mahal and Norman Blake. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.
  • Auburn-Opelika Women’s Expo, Sept. 22: The Opelika-Auburn News presents the third annual Auburn-Opelika Women’s Expo at from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bottling Plant Event Center in Opelika. Enjoy vendor booths, door prizes and free admission.
  • Color My College 5K, Sept. 25: Cross the finish line and get doused with Auburn orange and blue at the color-filled after-party. The 5K will take place at 1 p.m. and is sponsored by the Auburn Student Alumni Association to benefit the Auburn Student Alumni Endowment.
  • Homecoming Weekend, Sept. 30-Oct. 2: Celebrate the Auburn spirit with a weekend full of events that serve to unite the Auburn family. Enjoy festivities such as a pep rally, parade, concert, football game and more! Follow our blog for more details as the event gets closer.
