Going Green Around the House

Implementing green-friendly practices in your daily life can not only benefit the environment as a whole, but it can help you spend less money leading to a cleaner, healthier and more energy-efficient lifestyle. Your home is the best place to start with living green day-to-day. Here are a few easy-to-do ideas that you can incorporate into your routine to save money and improve your overall well-being—by going green around the house!

  • Adjust your thermostat before leaving the house. Depending on the season, set your thermostat lower or higher than you would have it when you were at home before leaving home. Instead of doing it manually, a programmable thermostat will do this for you if you choose to invest in one.
  • Unplug appliances when you are not using them. Even if an appliance is not turned on, it still uses some degree of energy when it is turned off. “Smart” power strips also exist to automatically cut energy use when appliances are not turned on.
  • Do away with incandescent bulbs. Use CFL or LED bulbs instead, which use about 70 to 90 percent less energy. They also last 10 to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
  • Use a water filter instead of bottled water. Purifying your tap water for drinking water eliminates the waste associated with bottled water.
  • Shorten your showers. It’s a simple way to reduce your water and heating bills.
  • Wash clothes in cold water as much as possible. Most of the energy used when washing clothes comes from heating the water.
  • Air dry your clothes. When possible, skip the machine dryer and use a drying rack or clothesline.
  • Control your light usage. Using dimmer switches, motion sensors and timers can help reduce the amount of light energy your family expends.
  • R-E-C-Y-C-L-E. If your city offers any type of recycling program, take advantage of it! Recycling your glass, plastics, aluminum and cardboard not only helps the environment, but it can save you money. The fewer recyclables you put in your trash can, the less money you have to spend on trash bags.

These are only a few ways to get you started going green around the house to help you spend less on energy costs and in turn benefit the world we live in!
