Most of us think of the obvious when it comes to getting a home ready to sell, including cleaning, clutter removal and repairs. However, it’s possible that your prospective home buyers will notice certain aspects of your home when considering it that you may have never thought about in getting it ready to go on the market.
Follow these tips to get your home ready to sell, and you should be ready for whoever walks through your door!
- Make your entrance welcoming. Your front walkway and door give buyers one of the first impressions of your home. Use items like potted plants or a new doormat to make it more welcoming.
- Brighten the interior of your home. Freshen up walls with a new coat of paint, and also pay attention to the trim around your windows.
- Suggest openness: Even if your home does not have an open floor plan, you can create the illusion of space using tricks like floor-length curtains, striped rugs and even a clear shower curtain in a small bathroom.
- Make minor furniture upgrades. This doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy all new furniture, but if you see small items that could benefit from replacement, it will probably be worth it to help freshen up the space.
- Organize the not-so-obvious. Areas like your refrigerator, medicine cabinet and cabinets under the sink may seem safe from potential walk-through buyers, but chances are—and if they are smart—they will check those areas out. Make sure they are clean and neat.
- Cue the lighting. Lamps make spaces softer and cozier compared to harsh overhead lighting.
- What’s that smell? We want potential buyers to be asking this in a good way. Either neutralize your regular home smell or enhance it with plug-in air fresheners, candles or even potpourri.
- Show off your storage. Potential home buyers want to know that there is plenty of space for their stuff. Try tricks like taking half the clothes out of your closet for viewings to make a closet appear larger.
- Pet free, way to be. At least when you’re showing a home. Some buyers may not be as much of an animal lover as you and could get turned away by the idea that animals live in the home. Have a friend or family member keep your pets while you are showing the home to prospects.
- Give your garage a facelift. Installing shelves, creating a work space and getting items like bikes and ladders off the ground and hung up will show prospective buyers that your home has potential.
If you’re getting your home ready to sell, put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What would you want and not want to see in a potential new home? Help your prospects envision the home as one that they would feel comfortable in.
